GIVING COMMUNITIES WHAT THEY WANT : CONTEXT SENSITIVE SOLUTIONS

This article looks at how the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) had adopted a more responsive and community-friendly policy through context sensitive solutions. It discusses how a context sensitive approach can be used to simultaneously accommodate transportation needs, community values, and environmental, cultural, and administrative concerns. Transportation planners and policy makers are working to encourage public participation in decision-making processes. Communities are participating in smart growth designs, transit-oriented development programs, bicycle advisory programs, and pedestrian safety task forces.
