This map details mainline tonnage throughout the United States in the 1970s. A sidebar explains growth and bankruptcies in regions such as the South and the East. The various railroad lines are indicated, while traffic density is denoted by the thickness of the line. Activity is concentrated around Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland, Ogden, San Bernardino, Birmingham, Washington and New York. Forty four railroads are listed.
