ALTERNATIVE-FUEL VEHICLES - GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, AND THEY SAVE MONEY TOO

This article profiles the use of alternative fuel vehicles in a government fleet that is attempting to meet Clean Air Act Standards. The purchase of natural-gas burning Honda Civic GXs by an agency is used as an example. Government incentives for using CNG vehicles, as well as some of their advantages regarding emissions and operating costs, are discussed. Staff acceptance of the vehicles is addressed, as well as real-life application of the CNG vehicles as parking enforcement officer transportation. A sidebar addresses San Francisco legislation mandating alternative fuels.
