FIDS FOR TODAY & TOMORROW : A NEW GENERATION OF AIRPORT INFORMATION DISPLAYS HAS ARRIVED

This article details the current technologies used in Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) inside airports. The author discusses the use of cathode ray tube (CRT) based technologies, plasma display panels (PDP), light emitting diode (LEDs) boards, as well as nascent thin film transistor (TFT) technology. The author also looks at smaller, micro-sized displays for personal use in airports and catalogues some of the major industry makers. Technology forecasts from industry are included, as well as a discussion on the deployment of MAISY, the Manchester Airport Information System.
