TTCI AND FRA SET UP TRAIN CONTROL TEST BED

Transportation Technology Center Inc (TTCI) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) are jointly setting up a communications and train control (C&TC) test bed under a four-phase project to allow affordable, controlled testing in a realistic railway element. The communications test bed is already complete, and the implementation of the train control test bed that will use a communications-based train control (CBTC) system known as Positive Train Control (PTC) is underway. The PTC capabilities will be expanded, and other communications and train control systems will be added. The test bed mirrors the physical and climatic environment without having to contend with the environment of an operating railway. This C&TC test bed includes several types of data and voice communication systems deployd along its 80 km of dedicated track. The test bed also includes nine-aspect cab signaling infrastructure and is now being upgraded to include PTC.
