USING TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE DRIVER TRAINING: THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE - AN ADJUNCT TO SIMULATION AND COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING

Achieving public transport safety and accident prevention begins with drivers, which means that driver recruitment, training and retention are a vital part of a public transport organization. This article focuses on experience working with two of Australia's largest public transport organizations. Described is the development of a technology used to improve driver training and assessment. The solution developed was a totally portable offline system for assessing driver performance during an on-road training session. The system is completely self-contained, it does not interfere with the bus electrical or electronic systems; it uses advance GPS and sensor technology to assess driving behavior. The system is being used to train new drivers and in refresher courses for existing drivers.
