RUBBER RESISTANCE: CABLE DAMPING ON MEGAMI BRIDGE

Its beautiful harbor and the quality of engineering found in its many shipyards have made the Japanese city Nagasaki famous. Discussed in this paper is the new bridge currently under construction that is drawing on both of the above assets and is set to become a major landmark and symbol of Nagasaki. Fittingly for a city with a long history of steel fabrication and shipbuilding, the bridge is being built entirely in steel. Because of the high design wind speeds and frequent typhoons that will affect the bridge, the choice of the dampers is the Gensui damper system that uses high damping rubber elements to absorb the energy generated by cable vibrations. The Gensui system offers high performance at an economic price and is currently the most popular damping system in Japan
