THE VEHICLE EMISSIONS AND PERFORMANCE MONITORING SYSTEM: ANALYSIS OF THE TAILPIPE EMISSIONS AND VEHICLE PERFORMANCE

This paper reports tailpipe measurement results from on-board vehicle measurements of both tailpipe emissions and vehicle performance. Relationships between carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide are evaluated against vehicle speed acceleration rates and elapsed journey time. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the capability of measuring on-board emissions using a low cost monitoring device, the vehicle performance and emissions monitoring system (VPEMS). The results presented in the paper are derived from the VPEMS device as fitted in the test vehicle. The results are consistent with other work that demonstrates the increase in emissions associated with acceleration events and the variation in emissions with instantaneous speed.
