Glogal Navigation Satellite systems (GNSS) technology has already been introduced in rail transport through such things as GPS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (Egnos), and the forthcoming Galileo project. So far, most of these applications are not related to safety. European railway interoperability is now a major concern in the European Commission transport policy. This article reviews a project that is underway to apply global satellite navigation to safety critical systems such as the European Rail traffic Management System and European Train Control System. The three main objectives of applying GNSS technology to ERTMS and ETC are: to prove the feasibility of integrating a GNSS locator for interoperability with the ETC on board equipment; to develop a common test bed; and to prove the feasibility of applying a GNSS locator to support a traffic monitoring center.
