FIFTH SPEED-UP LAUNCHED
The launch of the new timetable in April 2004 marked not only the fifth speed-up of train services in China since 1997, but also several firsts for rail transport in China. Some of the firsts include: the country's entry into service of new trains, improved catering, and new fares structure. For the first time, the speed up also included an acceleration of freight trains. Five pairs of parcel trains have been introduced on some routes, and Chinese Railways has also introduced dedicated container and refrigerated trains on lines linking the main cities.
