This article provides an overview of global positioning systems (GPS) and how they can be applied to a variety of infrastructure construction and management applications. The city of Seattle is embracing GPS technology by launching a regional GPS network called the Puget Reference Station Network (PRSN). The PRSN will supply centimeter-level, real-time GPS data to government agencies, emergency managers, research institutions, scientific agencies and private surveying and mapping professionals for applications including surveying, field inventory, construction, disaster response and scientific research. The PRSN should improve communication, data sharing and project management while reducing costs.
