THE RUBBER-ROAD INTERFACE AND ABRASION - OBSERVATIONS AND ANOMALIES

This article discusses the cause and process of abrasion of rubber surfaces on tyres, already studied by several researchers. In this study experiments were performed to gain insights into the abrasion processes using a highly instrumented and adaptable blade abrader apparatus, on five elastomeric materials: three had natural rubber as base polymer, one had acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, and one had ethylene propylene diene rubber. Microscope images were gathered and examined. For the first four materials a clear Schallamach abrasion pattern developed and flaps were observed. Data suggested a clear linear relationship between flap thickness and wear rate.
