FUNCTION OF MECHANICAL ANCHORS IN TUNNELS
Often the role of post installed anchors in the construction industry is perceived to be insignificant in terms of the value engineering aspects and thus is often only considered at the later stages of the design process. In fact over the past ten to fifteen years mechanical post installed anchors and the technology, driven by ever increasing demands such as performance and durability, have been matched by equal increases in the research and development of suitable products to meet these requirements. Three major technological advances have been in part responsible for the high standards of solutions possessed today. Firstly, the recognition of the performance of an anchor in cracked or non-cracked concrete, together with the way in which the anchor functions. Secondly, the influence and effects of corrosion on the materials from which the anchors are produced. Finally, the forthcoming implementation of European Technical Approvals (ETAs). This paper highlights, through three examples and typical applications, how progress has been made to make a satisfactory choice of anchor in respect to the specification at the time of design and the technology then available.
