"WHIPLASH PHENOMENON" IN RAIL/SLEEPER INTERACTION

During passing of the vehicle over the railway track, the wheel/rail contact force is transferred to sublayers by rail/sleeper and sleeper/ballast interactive forces. Procedure of force transmission depends on vehicle speed and amplitude of irregularities, track and vehicle parameters and so on. The results of calculation indicate that the up-lift force between rail and sleeper occur with increasing amplitude of rail corrugation, where it can be interpreted as a "whiplash phenomenon". In this paper, dynamic behaviour of train-track system is investigated under corrugation excitations and the rail/sleeper interactive forces are calculated in different amplitudes of corrugation.
