THE CEMBRE RAIL WEB BONDING SYSTEM

A reliable electrical connection system is essential for providing an effective and energy efficient means of joining a conductor to the rail web in various bonding applications. A system offering a low, constant resistance ensures lower overall Permanent Way running costs and improved train and infrastructure performance. A research programme carried out by Cembre involved a review of the existing rail bonding solutions, in terms of installation, electrical performance and maintenance requirements. The results of which have contributed to the development of a unique rail web bonding system. A rigorous series of tests were conducted on the new system to provide an understanding of its long-term performance. The conclusions drawn led to the introduction of a copper bush system, providing a low and stable electrical resistance in all conditions and suitable for AC or DC electrification. The technical and practical advantages of the new system are discussed together with the positive influence on health and safety issues. A description of the approval process is given along with an outline of the applications and subsequent developments of the original idea. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
