AFFORDABLE HIGH SPEED RAILWAYS FOR UK
A civil engineering design project was started at Liverpool JM University in 1996 to design an affordable high speed railway between London and NW England. The project is intended to be commercially financed and would run trains at 200mph at a cost of about #2000 million, excluding signalling and rolling stock. The alignment identified would require the co-operation of major private and public sector enterprises. The new alignment could carry piggyback traffic overnight when high speed passenger trains were not operating. A typical London-Manchester journey time would be about 70 minutes. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
