PROSPECTS FOR A TAMPING MACHINE APPLICATION IN THE RAILWAY TRACK DIAGNOSTICS

The presented paper is a continuation of the research carried out, at the Technical University of Gdansk, in the field of longitudinal forces in a railway track. The results proved that the lateral displacements method being in use at the time in the USA and in the UK required certain modifications, namely the longitudinal force in the railway track could be determined more precisely by use of the horizontal lateral force variation. The paper presents a mathematical model of a railway track being under the stress of the lateral force involving vertical as well as horizontal components. The numerical analysis carried out has entirely proved the conclusions drawn from the earlier experimental investigations. The analysis has determined also the direction for further investigations based on lateral displacement of the entire track grate. Taking the above into account the idea of using a tamping machine for the railway track diagnostics has been proposed. The main aim would be the determination of the longitudinal forces in the railway track and the lateral reaction force of the ballast. Some promising results have been obtained from the experiments carried out by use of a tamping machine. The machine can also be a source of important bits of information supplied on line (during its operation) about the track structure. The experiment as well as the theoretical analysis allowed for the following statement: taking account of the results of the railway track curvature measurement obtained for different values of the lateral displacement, it is possible to draw some conclusions related to the longitudinal forces in the railway track.
