COMPARISON OF TYRE/ROAD NOISE FOR A RANGE OF SURFACES ON THE A47, A447, A511 AND B582 IN LEICESTERSHIRE

TRL limited were commissioned by Leicestershire County Council to examine the noise levels of various surfaces laid on different roads located within the County. The surfaces measured included several sections of hot rolled asphalt (HRA), surface dressings, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and close graded macadam. The main objectives of the study were to obtain information on the relative noise levels of different surface types at different test speeds and to investigate how the noise levels change over time on selected surfaces to establish information about their acoustic durability. It was hoped that this data could then be combined with data on texture and skidding performance to help inform future surfacing and road maintenance strategies. (A)
