DEVELOPING AROUND TRANSIT: STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS THAT WORK

The most frequently used term applied to the concept of development near transit is transit-oriented development, or TOD. This book is about TOD, and its principal topic is the special considerations involved in developing in a transit district, and it takes a broad view of the theme. After introducing the issues and opportunities relating to developing around transit, specific aspects of developing in a TOD are cover as follows: Chapter 2 discusses the financial value of transit to adjacent properties; chapter 3 describes planning for development around transit and the key elements of a successful transit district; chapters 4 and 5 focus on the specific issues in and successful approaches to developing around transit in urban areas and suburban areas; chapter 6 discusses the particular issues involved in developing around terminal stations and provides examples of how the design of terminal stations can encourage or discourage supporting development in adjacent areas. The final chapter, based on conclusions of a special workshop of experts held in 2002, summarizes key principles for developing around transit.
