SCHEDULES OF TRAFFIC CALMING IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Application TP 145 "Guidelines for design of the throughpasses in urban areas" has great expectations in lowering the accident rate. This publication might be considered as crucial in the field of traffic calming in the Czech Republic. Some of the projects that are trying to increase road traffic safety are introduced in the paper. Designers and decision makers of those cases had to use design parameters and principles other than currently allowed in technical standards. Currently the greatest extent of modern processing application is used in redesign of 1080 meters long throughpass of highway I/17 in Hermanuv Mestec with co-operation from the Road and Motorway Directorate and Transport Research Center. The main purpose of this redesign is lowering the vehicle speed and increasing safety and convenience of inhabitants. A small roundabout in Litomysl where over-dimensional load transportation was required is another example. Although new design elements were used, there are no problems with over-dimensional load transportation using the road II/360. Three fatal accidents on a IInd class road in Tesany brought about requirements for modification of traffic signs. Optic-acoustical brakes for lowering speed of vehicles, another modification of traffic signs and reducing the length of pedestrian crossings were used to improve the situation. Designers and decision makers of the projects mentioned above had to promote new, not standard approaches. It was necessary to get over the old way of thinking of many officers in different decision-making levels. Some areas of design and planning remain still unsolved and they will require some additional research both at national and international level. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123193.
