HOLLYWOOD'S STEAM LOCOMOTIVE : WHEN THE PRODUCERS OF THE ANIMATED THE POLAR EXPRESS WENT LOOKING FOR A LOCOMOTIVE, THEY FOUND PERE MARQUETTE 1225

This article gives an overview of the Pere Marquette Railway No.1225 steam locomotive, which began service in 1941 as a Lima Berkshire freight engine. Residing at the Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) in Owosso, Michigan, the 1225 has achieved stardom by being featured in animated version of The Polar Express. The article describes how the 1225 first handled wartime traffic, was restored by the Michigan State University (MSU) Railroad club, and then transferred to the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation in 1980, which ultimately lead to the Trust's name change to SRI. The 1225 has enabled the SRI to help fulfill its mission directed at educating the public about steam railroading.
