This paper presents methods for estimating the towing resistance of ocean going construction barges, and also the required tug horsepower for a given tow. Very little information has been published to enable the required tug horsepower to be directly calculated for a given tow. This is due, no doubt, to the fact that the performance of tugs in terms of tow rope pull is not simply related to the horsepower. However, analyses of available data has provided a method of estimating the required tug power for ocean tows, and is also given in this paper. It is based on data for a large number of tugs of various sizes. Using this method the appropriate power, type and number of tugs can be selected for a given tow, at any desired towing speed, with allowances made for weather and hull fouling as required.
