THE FROST-HEAVE TEST AS A COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENT

The author argues that while much attention is being focused on the frost-heave test at present, there is a danger that insufficient attention is given to other requirements for sub-base and base materials. In deciding whether a granular material is suitable for sub-base or base construction the following tests should be carried out in addition to the frost-heave test: grading, plasticity of fines, compaction tests, 10% fines value, and CBR. Following the results of an earlier TRRL report which indicated poor reproducibility of these tests, a specification, which dealt with the preparation of soil samples for test, was circulated for comment. Problems of the preparation of samples for the frost-heave test are discussed. /TRRL/
