MACHINERY NOISE AND VIBRATION MONITORING SYSTEM

The David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center has proposed a structureborne noise and vibration monitoring system incorporating "off-the-shelf" analysis instrumentation. The system consists of 50 to 200 permanently attached sensors (accelerometers), amplification stages, switching unit analyzers (1/3 octave and narrowband), and hard copy units. Improved analysis and diagnosis of structureborne noise data can reduce and may eventually eliminate the "open and inspect" approach to machinery maintenance. The DTNSRDC system was designed for monitoring machinery noise data aboard Navy ships, but is applicable to any plant with a significant amount of machinery.
