COMPLIANCE FUNCTION OF FOOTING IN TWO-LAYER MEDIUM
The paper presents a set of formulas to determine the complex swaying compliances for embedded rigid footings in a two-layer medium, excited by a harmonic forcing function. The bottom layer generally, though not necessarily, consists of rock. The top layer is with or without material damping. The results obtained by using the formulas are compared with "exact" solutions by the finite element and semi-analytical methods. Comparisons between the results of the suggested formulas and the "exact" solutions show excellent agreement for practical cases. Parametric studies have been made. They include the effects of material damping, depth of embedment, and relative shear wave velocities of the two layers. The results are directly applicable to many problems in soil-structure interation. /Author/
