EFFICIENCY IS THE WATCHWORD

In this completely wheeled operation at Elizabeth, N.J., the upland is an enormous parking lot with each container sitting on its own chassis. Since this type of operation requires more than the usual amount of land, Maher utilizes its space judiciously so that 4,500 container and chassis slots are contained on 207 acres of upland. Maher Terminal in the New York-New Jersey Port is the world's largest multi-user containership terminal, possessing a berthing length of 3,150 feet, an area of 375,000 square feet in its container freight station for stuffing and stripping, and a capacity of 238 truck bays, as well as a rail siding. The on-line real-time computer system is comprised of three Digital Equipment Corporation PDP 15 computers which have a total capacity to run 75 independent tasks at the same time--an example of time-sharing on a large scale! At the Maher Terminal, the on-line computer tracks within 30 to 45 seconds the actual movement of any container in the yard. Container is checked at each entrance gate by a Regiscope and Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) linked to the central computer. As the container is checked and moved to the next stop, papers are processed and passed to the receiving office. After the loader container has been weighed, it arrives in front of the Trailer Interchange Receipt (TIR) inspection lanes. There container and chassis are scrutinzed, the TIR is completed, and the driver is assigned a parking location in the yard. The documentation is processed by the time a driver has parked his container and moved to the clerk's office. Through the CRT, clerks are able to enter the dock receipt, TIR and gate pass data onto the real time computer. Maher's carefully controlled system utilizing the computer also makes the operation to select an empty container more simple. Analysis of the empty reservation system supplied by Maher's on-line computer provides the specific containers available for use as well as the number of containers on chassis by status and type.
