A SIMPLE ESTIMATION CURVE FOR MAXIMUM LOADING CAPACITY OF TRANSVERSE FRAME ELEMENTS OF SHIPS

The estimation of the maximum loading capacity of structural members is fundamental to the analysis of the ultimate strength of ship structions. The Authors present a simple method for such estimations in the case of a member subject to bending moments. The method, which is based on published results of buckling-collapse tests on transverse frame elements and other tests, requires only stress and buckling-strength calculations. Accuracy is within about 10%, despite disparities in the type of structure and stiffening member and other factors. The method is not applicable to cases of collapse under shearing or axial forces.
