A PROCEDURE FOR CALCULATING THE LOADS ON SHIPS IN A SEAWAY, TAKING HYDRODYNAMIC IMPACT-FORCES INTO ACCOUNT

This is an abridgement of a paper presented at a Meeting of the Schifgbautechnische Gesellschaft (the STG), held in Hamburg, Nov. 1977. A brief description is given of a new procedure, based on the strip method, for calculating the loads on a hull structure in long-crested head seas. Non-linear impact and buoyancy forces are taken into account in the equations of motion, and impact loads resulting from slamming are also included. The procedure is explained with the aid of an example in which a highspeed boat (the Schnellboot K1.143) is used; it should be possible, however, to use it for other types of vessel. Results so far have been encouraging, but further investigations remain to be done on comparisions with measured values, the reduction of calculation time, and the use of statistical information.
