CORROSION PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH SHIPBOARD WASTE INCINERATION SYSTEMS

This paper has reviewed materials selection processes and problems associated with evaporative retort, vortex and multi-functional incinerators. The high chrome nickel base alloys IN690 and IN671 appear to be the most promising candidate materials to attain the desired liner lifetime of 10,000 hours in these systems. The desire to develop a total integrated waste system capable of high temperature disposal of wet garbage, waste oil, sewage sludge, industrial wastes and solid refuse will necessitate an increased emphasis on ceramic and refractory materials.
