ESTIMATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE FROM THE UTILIZATION OF SECONDARY MATERIALS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION USING ACCELERATED AGING TECHNIQUES
Described is the development of an accelerated aging approach to predict the future physical and environmental behavior of pavement products made with recycled materials. To accelerate the aging process, three primary experimental variables based on three plausible field mechanisms were examined: Arrhenius aging (AA - aging at elevated temperature), cyclical mechanical stress; and freeze-thaw (FT) deterioration. A statistically based experimental design was used. Evaluation of the ability of the accelerated aging techniques to model real time material aging was based on Physical characterization and measurement of fundamental leaching parameters. The paper compares the leaching behavior of the laboratory specimens that underwent accelerated aging to slab samples from U.S. 20 in Iowa that underwent field aging.
