WEATHERING STEELS VERSUS ORDINARY STRUCTURAL STEELS AS A BASE FOR PAINTS

According to independent outdoor exposure tests conducted in the marine/industrial atmosphere of The Hague, Netherlands, weathering steels, which are becoming increasingly popular for container construction on the basis of their claimed inherent anti-corrosion properties, perform little or no better than ordinary structural steel when they are painted. In this article the director of Stichting Doelmatig Verzinken (the Dutch Galvanising Institute) compares the two types of steel.
