PRECONDITIONS FOR THE EMPLOYMENT OF SEMI-DIRECT RAMPS AT GRADE-SEPARATED JUNCTIONS

EINSATZBEDINGUNGEN FUR HALDBIREKTE RAMPEN IN PLANFREIEN KNOTENPUNKTEN

The preconditions for the employment of indirect and semi-direct ramps are being investigated at 15 autobahn crosses. The evaluation criteria used are: economy, traffic safety, capacity. The evaluation criteria are each considered separately. The recommendations derived directly from practice refer to the choice of the type of junction for an autobahn cross, to the guidance of the motorists at autobahn crosses, and to the design of the superrelevation in the ramps. It is demonstrated that traffic safety decreases noticeably where types of junction are used that deviate from the norm. A comparison of the types of ramps shows that the accident rate of the loop ramp is markedly higher than that of the semi-direct ramp. The economy is above all influenced by the capital expenditure which is higher with semi-direct ramps. Semi-direct ramps should be built where the capacity of an indirect ramp is insufficient or where the weaving section is overloaded. The differences in the time costs and the operating expenses between the two types of ramp are relatively low. /Author/
