FIXED WATER SPRINKLING YSSTEMS FOR FIRE CONTROL IN ROAD TUNNELS

Fixed water sprinkling systems are often mentioned as part of safety improvement in road tunnels. Yet, such systems can only provide advantages when integrated within a global systemic approach of tunnel safety. Even if certain countries, such as Japan, have made an extensive use of sprinkler systems, the issue of their use is still sensitive. France, like other European countries, has always taken a conservative approach in the establishment of such systems in French tunnels. Indeed, under certain conditions, these systems can entail additional hazards for the people exposed. Besides, their actual efficiency to put out car fires in tunnels has not yet been demonstrated with sufficient accuracy and certainty. Therefore, it is of prime necessity to acquire further knowledge before qualifying fixed water sprinkling systems for use in road tunnels. This paper reports on a study, and more particularly addresses the result of the two first stages of the study. (A)
