AIR POLLUTION INFORMATION SYSTEM (APIS)
Innovative solutions are required to manage problems related to the steadily increasing traffic in densely populated areas. Among them, air pollution plays a dominant role. The idea of the Air Pollution Information System (APIS) is to monitor the air quality on a continuous basis with mobile devices and combine the data with measurements taken at stationary sites. Public transportation vehicles (preferably buses or tramways) serve as test vehicles. During the service hours of these public transportation means, air pollution data are measured en-route together with the positions of the buses or tramways. These data are transmitted to a processing center where the results are available in near real-time. The innovative feature of the project is the continuous acquisition of air pollution data where continuity refers to both position and time. For the covering abstract see ITRD E122175.
