A NEW INVAR MEMBRANE CONTAINMENT SYSTEM FOR CONSTRUCTION OF LNG CARRIERS

The paper reviews the construction of the "gaz-transport" (gt) standard technique for LNG tank insulation, consisting of a primary and secondary "Invar" barrier with plywood insulation in-between. An insulation system based on the use of plastic foam reinforced in three directions with glass fibre is then described, and the success of a combination of the two systems, called "GT-MCD" (GAZ-Transport and McDonnell Douglas) design is described in some detail. Boil-off rates of only 0.11% are claimed. Order from: NSFI as No. 14505.
