IMPACT OF MINERAL FILLER ON THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MASTICS. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN FILLER AND POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMENS

The reported research is investigating the possible impact of the nature of the mineral filler on the properties of mastics made with polymer modified bitumens (physical blends or in-situ cross-linking). The properties which have been more particularly looked at are small strain rheology (G*, delta on Metravib rheometer), breaking behaviour (direct tensile tests at 5 degrees C - 100mm/min) and the modification of the microstructure (UV microscopy). Among the results obtained so far with 3 fillers and different types of modified binders, essentially the tensile tests evidenced different evolutions depending on the nature of filler and bitumen (binder/filler interactions). Whereas the less modified binders tend to react in the same way as pure bitumens, this is no longer the case for highly modified binders. For in-situ cross-linked binders, the nature of the filler did not appear to be important. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
