COMPARATIVE EXPERIMENT FOR PMB AND HARD BITUMEN ON A THIN ANTI RUTTING MAINTENANCE

In the context of the charter of innovation agreed by SAPRR, ASFA, Direction des Routes and SCREG, SCREG built four comparative sections of thin asphalt concrete including four bituminous binders which can give a good rutting resistance to the mix. The aim of the experiment was to compare the behavior on ageing and reflective thermal cracking of the thin asphalt mixes under a big traffic and in continental climate conditions. Four bituminous binders were used: Pure grade 20/30, Hard anti-rutting binder MULTIPHALT HM, PmB BITULASTIC EC, and asphaltite bitumen 20/30. The follow up in time of the four sections showed some differences on the reflective cracking resistance; ageing of four binders cannot be compared with the RTFOT and PAV procedures, except for the pure bitumen 20/30; and a good rutting resistance on the four sections as predicted by the LCPC wheel track tester. The experiment displayed the fact that PmB and special multigrade binder were appropriate to longer lasting performances of thin wearing courses. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
