EFFECTS OF ROAD AND TRAFFIC FACTORS ON ROAD SAFETY IN ETHIOPIA
A study of the effects of road and traffic factors on traffic accidents in Ethiopia is presented in this thesis. Accident data indicate that road safety is Ethiopia is a serious problem. Traffic accident fatalities have progressively increased with growth in the population and the number of vehicles. Pedestrian fatalities comprise 56% of the fatalities. There is a low level of traffic safety awareness, behaviour of road users is inadequate, roads and vehicles are of a poor standard, and traffic legisation and enforcement are inadequate. The study indicated that improving the poor road infrastructure and poor traffic operation would reduce road accidents. An investigation of accident reports for incidents on main roads in Addis Ababa and on the road to the settlement of Nazareth was carried out. Vehicle accident rates increased but vehicle pedestrian accidents decreased with increasing traffic volume in Addis Ababa. Provision of a median between the traffic streams in opposite directions significantly decreased the head on collision and pedestrian accident rates. Pedestrian accident rates incresed with increase in traffic lane width and with increase in the number of pedestrians. Zebra crossings at junctions decreased the number of pedestrian fatalities. On the Nazareth road the risk of pedestrian accidents was higher in built-up than in non built-up areas. Hilliness increased the number of pedestrian accidents, rollover accidents and multi-vehicle accidents involving goods vehicles.
