REINVENTING TRANSPORTATION: EXPLORING THE PARADIGM SHIFT NEEDED TO RECONCILE TRANSPORTATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OBJECTIVES
This paper investigates the paradigm shift in thinking that is necessary in order to achieve a sustainable transportation system. Instead of focusing on vehicle movement as an end in itself, sustainable transportation focuses on access. When access is addressed as a significant issue, it is found that it can often be improved with solutions that reduce the need to travel altogether, such as improved communications and land use management. When strategies that can support sustainability are implemented together (such as more efficient pricing and land use, and improved travel and mode choices) they can often provide substantial benefits.
