COMPUTER AND MICROWAVE BALISE TRAIN CONTROL

The article discusses a new computer and microwave balise aided train control system called Combat that was developed by the Japan's Railway Technical Research Institute to use on single track lines. Combat is designed to meet a growing demand for a low cost signalling system that requires less maintenance than traditional systems using track circuits. Some of the benefits from using Combat rather than a conventional signalling system include: improvements of safety and reliability of train detection, interlocking, and single line functions; enabling of centralized train operation and control at low cost; an excellent performance by the microwave balise against noise; and no components installed on track making track maintenance simpler.
