THE ABCS (AND ODPS AND ATSAS AND ISACS...) OF TRANSIT SECURITY

The article provides an overlook of public transportation security initiatives as of 7/7/04. At a glance, they are: APTA (American Public Transportation Association) System Safety Program Plan standards for bus, rail, and commuter rail operations, APTA safety committees, security workshops, web-site, sharing best practices, peer reviews; National Transit Institute (NTI) Security Awareness Training for transit employees; Transportation Safety Institute courses; John A. Volpe Center emergency response planning and security design guidelines; Department of Homeland Security: Transportation Safety Administration, Office of Surface Transportation Security, Office of Transportation Safety Policy; Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP); Federal Law Enforcement Training Center; and Minnesota Institute: in partnership with APTA in conducting Transportation Security Summit. Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), along with other Department of Transportation modes are working in partnership with the other listed organizations and agencies. Additionally, the FY '03 budget had $65 million earmarked for the Office of Domestic Preparedness to be provided through the states to the highest risk transit systems in the country.
