Since its inception the LUF system has been subjected to a great deal of criticism regarding terminal surface damage. This paper analyzes the lifetime and maintenance cost of asphalt terminal surfacing subject to mass and point loadings from a LUF operation. At the same time the cost of surface maintenance is indicated and compared against the savings in handling costs with LUF. The study was compiled after joint research by the Port of Gothenburg; Goteborgs Stuveri AB (the stevedoring company); the National Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute (VTI); and Salen and Wicander Terminalysystem AB (the manufacturer).
