MOTION SUPPRESSION FOR FLOATING RIGS

The authors describe a nonresonant, passive roll and/or pitch suppression system for floating rigs, which is designed to function at all wave periods and under any vessel loading condition. The system does not depend on transferring water from one side of the vessel to the other, but uses compressed air and ballast tanks open at the bottom. Prototype systems are being installed on three drilling barges, and the system has been successfully tested on a jackup model.
