ACCELERATING IMPLEMENTATION OF RAILWAY TECHNOLOGY

The history and facilities of the Transportation Technology Center Inc (TTCI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) situated in Colorado, USA, are outlined. The objective of the TTCI is to accelerate the rate at which beneficial technologies are developed and used by the railway industry. The test tracks and test laboratories of the TTCI are described. TTCI serves the AAR member railroads through the Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) Program. Projects include heavy axle load research, research to improve safety and reduce the costs of the track, track components and bridges, research into freight car and train issues, and research to optimise vehicle and track performance. Methods for reducing the stress-state at the wheel/rail interface are considered. TTCI technical standards and quality assurance, commercial activities, locomotive performance verification, certification of new bogie designs, crashworthiness testing, consulting and problem saving projects are discussed.
