SELF EXCITED OSCILLATIONS OF DIESEL-GENERATORS OPERATING INDEPENDENTLY

Recent operation failures of diesel generators operating on ships, which took the form of revolution oscillations caused by electromagnetic self-excitation phenomena are reported. Such phenomena were analyzed up to now only in operation of rigid grids while in the considered cases they appeared in a system consisting of only three aggregates. The oscillation observed in certain ranges of the load was so strong that it made an ordinary parallel operation quite impossible and could be suppressed only by the use of additional damping windings. Two phenomena leading to such effects, namely an electromagnetic torsion spring rigidness and its amplification influenced, usually, by a damping winding are analyzed.
