FRACTURE PERFORMANCE OF SHIP STEELS AND WELDMENTS

The results of some fracture tests on some typical ship steel and weldments are discussed. The testing of SMAW (Manual Shielded Metal Arc Weld) and SAW (Automatic Submerged Arc Weld) weldments in six grades of ship steel was performed, and CVN (Charpy V-Notch), tensile and explosion crack starter test data were compared. The results of the Charpy test did not correlate with the results of a structural test. This indicates that the use of a Charpy for other than quality control is not recommended.
