PINHOLE TEST FOR DISPERSIVE SOIL-SUGGESTED CHANGE

In the laboratory test devised by Sherard, et al for direct measurement of the dispersibility of compacted fine-grained soils, a small hole (termed pinhole) is made in the specimen to be tested, and distilled water is allowed to flow through the hole. Dispersibility is assessed by observing effluent color and changes of flow rate through the hole, and by visual inspection of the hole after completion of the test. In an attempts to ascertain the effect of curing on the dispersibility of compacted soils and to improve the correlation between the pinhole tests and other test methods, some uncured soil samples were tested. Those samples which were dispersive were subjected to curing for seven days and then retested. Curing after compaction significantly changed the results of pinhole tests on some soils, even when they had never been air-dried. The test procedure for pinhole testing should accordingly be modified, i.e., soils giving a dispersive result when uncured should be retested in a cured condition.
