ROTATIONAL CAPACITY OF PLASTIC HINGES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

This report is a detailed study of the plastic properties of reinforced concrete beams and of various factors affecting the rotational capacity. The study has increased the possibilities of designing hyperstatic reinforced concrete structures according to the limit load theory. The method is based on studying the mechanic energy balance close to the plastic hinge of the beam and the calculations are based on simplified but realistic characteristic curves of materials, reinforcement steel and concrete. Two types of reinforcement and two types of concrete were investigated. The concrete types were characterized by different compressive yield stress. One of the steel types was characterized by a marked flow stress, while the other lacked a marked flow stress. After the deriving of necessary formulas, from which equations of rotational capacity are set up, results from calculations comprising different combinations and parameters are given. The calculations are carried out by means of a computer. The computer program is presented in an appendix to the report. /TRRL/
