POZZOLAN CEMENT IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

CEMENTOS PUZOLANICOS EN HORMIGON PRETENSADO

Pozzolan cements are for general use, and the author recalls that they can often fulfil requirements better than portland cements. It is erroneous to state that pozzolan encourages corrosion of concrete. Numerous tests have shown that no substantial change in the alkalinity of concrete takes place, the concrete forming a thin protective ferric hydrate layer on the steel surface. It frequently happens that, in spite of a marked reduction in the quantity of lime in the solution, the overall alkalinity is maintained and even increases with time. Furthermore the pozzolan reaction increases imperviousness. These types of concrete are more elastic and supple, and their ultimate behaviour is better because their thermal contraction is smaller and their aptitude to creep under load is greater. /TRRL/
