This book is intended to improve knowledge concerning intercity transport (its environmental effects, capacity, economic factors and modes), and covers shipping, railways, public road transport, air transport and pipe lines. It describes the development of transport systems and discusses forecasting and evaluation. The development of transport modes up to the present, is reviewed in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, safety, noise and air pollution problems are analyzed, and formulae and tables for evaluating and measuring the disturbances and operational characteristics, are included. Chapter 3 is devoted to the calculation of peak hour traffic delays. Investment and operation costs are analyzed in Chapter 4, and tariff policies, network formation and operation scheduling are discussed. Finally, Chapter 5 presents some new forecasting models for passenger and freight transport. /TRRL/
